At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
